Your Pain Is Real — And It Can Be Unlearned | Dr Howard Schubiner

You’ve had the scans. They found something, a worn disc, a bulge, a tear. It seemed to explain everything.

Except that most people who feel nothing at all have exactly the same scans.

That single fact is where this conversation starts: for a great many people, chronic pain is not a report from damaged tissue. It’s a decision the brain makes about danger. And decisions can be revised.

Dr Howard Schubiner spent twenty-five years as a conventional physician before a colleague handed him a book that broke the rule he’d been taught his whole career. He now co-develops two of the treatments being tested for this in universities worldwide.

In this hour, we cover:

→ All pain is real. The injury doesn’t decide. The brain does.

→ Half of pain-free people in their thirties have abnormal spinal MRIs.

→ Pain that moves, that disappears on holiday, that starts the moment you think about it — none of that is how injured tissue behaves.

→ Fear is what keeps the circuit alive.

This is not “it’s all in your head.” It is the opposite, and it is a far more demanding idea, because it hands you something to do.

🎧 Le Labo de l’Humain, hosted by Dr Olivier Benarroche.
