As the penetration of renewable energy generation projects increases significantly around the world in order to decarbonize our energy systems, our power grids are becoming harder to manage. Investments in Energy storage technologies, often called the “holy grail” of the new energy systems, are growing rapidly in markets like the US, China, UK, and Australia among others, since energy storage  is one of the key technologies that will enable us to balance a more unstable electricity system.

In this episode of Powering Tomorrow we talk to Professor Nigel Brandon to explore the role of energy storage in the new energy systems, and the different available energy storage technologies for the main applications required by the modern power grids for short, medium, and long-term storage.

Professor Brandon is the Dean of Engineering at Imperial College London and the Director of the UK Hydrogen and Fuel Cell hub.
