Eczema is becoming increasingly common in children… but is it really "just a skin problem"?

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Kelly Cmolik, Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine specializing in holistic dermatology and chronic inflammatory conditions. Kelly is also someone very special to me: more than 15 years ago, she was my Chinese medicine doctor and played an important role in my recovery from an autoimmune disease.

We talk about the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to eczema, the limits of focusing only on symptom management, inflammation and the immune system, and the potential role of environmental exposures, diet, gut health and total load. And why an individualized approach matters so much.

A fascinating conversation that reminds us that when the skin becomes inflamed, sometimes we need to look far beyond the skin.

In this episode:

  • What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (and is it safe for little ones)?

  • Why is eczema becoming increasingly common?

  • "They'll grow out of it": is that always true?

  • Eczema, asthma and allergies: how are they connected?

  • The limits of long-term steroid creams, and why you should never stop them abruptly

  • Does everything really start in the gut?

  • Why elimination diets aren't always the answer (and why your child should still get cake at the birthday party)

  • Can we address the deeper drivers of eczema?

  • Why early intervention may make a difference

This episode shares Dr. Cmolik's clinical perspective and experience. It is not medical advice. If your child uses a steroid cream or any medication, talk to your healthcare provider before changing anything.
